A Journey of 1,000 Miles

Hi, my name is Becky and I am originally from England. I started my journey with Camp Canada as a Leadership Counsellor in 2017, and I can say with confidence that I knew from day one that I was going to have an amazing summer camp experience with Camp Canada. What I did not know then was that two years later, my journey would lead me to join the Camp Canada Team in their Toronto Office!

I always knew that I wanted to travel outside of the UK to explore the natural beauty of Canada. After completing my teaching qualification in the UK, working at a summer camp in Canada seemed like a great opportunity to continue working with kids across the pond.

As a Camp Counsellor, you essentially take on the role of everything to your campers. You are the one they turn to when they are homesick or if they feel unwell, and you are right there with them to celebrate when they build their first fire, or see the beauty of the wooded shoreline from their first out trip in a canoe. I loved that in my role at camp I was able to not only teach new skills, but I also made a meaningful difference to the confidence and emotional wellbeing of the children that were in my care.

I was anxious about how I would go about the process of applying to work at a summer camp in Canada, but the staff at Camp Canada made it so easy and such an enjoyable, positive process. I felt from day one that Camp Canada took the time to get to know me as an individual, and would absolutely find me a camp placement that would suit my skills and personality perfectly - and they did!

After submitting my application and having a friendly Skype interview with the Placement Team, I was placed as a Leadership Counsellor at a summer camp in Ontario. Camp Canada helped me with everything, including how to get from the airport to the hostel that they booked for me, to my awesome orientation in Toronto, and to organizing my travel to camp. Most importantly, while working at camp, I felt that I was able to make a meaningful difference every day in the placement that Camp Canada had found for me.

It’s hard to believe that two years later I am now working for Camp Canada in their Toronto Office, and have the absolute pleasure of helping applicants who, just like me, want to make a difference to the lives of campers and have the summer of a lifetime.

I made lifelong friends from all over the globe while working at camp, and had a summer of incredible, life-changing experiences.

If you are nervous about applying to Camp Canada - go for it! At Camp Canada we support you with your summer camp experience from start to finish.

Remember - a journey of 1,000 miles starts with a single step; and you never know where that first step will take you.
