why should I be an arts & crafts instructor at camp?

If you’re a creative person who would love to teach help kids improve their skills, then look no further as the role as an arts and crafts instructor at camp is perfect for you. Teaching campers arts and crafts is one of the most rewarding roles at camp.

Watching campers develop their artistic skills and use their imaginations to create their own artwork is a fantastic feeling and you feel a great sense of reward watching them.

It is important that you demonstrate to camp directors your ability with various different painting methods such as acrylic, watercolour, oil and charcoal, for example through a portfolio.

what does an arts & crafts instructor do at camp?

As an arts and crafts instructor, you are responsible for coming up with projects for campers to participate in. This could vary from creating frames to creating puppets! Activities in arts and craft vary massively so being imaginative is an important quality for this role.

Getting messy is part of the job (obviously!) and you will be using many different paint mediums, so campers can become well skilled with different skills which they can then use for the future.

Being an arts and crafts instructor may also involve you with projects in other departments such as making props and costumes for the camp play.

How much experience do I need?

If you’re not the best in the world at your activity, there’s no need to worry - you’ll be teaching kids who are just there to have fun, most will even be complete beginners. You’ll be fully trained before your campers arrive, and you’ll be supported by the other counsellors at your camp.

How many children should I expect to teach?

Campers come down to sessions in divisions (age groups). These can vary in skill level, but usually are made up of 10-30 campers. You’ll then be paired with an individual camper or a group, and don’t worry - you’ll be supported by your fellow specialists and counsellors.

Do I still get days off?

Of course! Everyone needs time to recharge their batteries after an exciting but hectic week at camp, as well as the opportunity to explore the local area and further afield. Most camps will give you a 24 hour block of free time every week, whilst some others provide 2-4 days off in a row every few weeks.
