why should I be a hiking instructor at summer camp?

Canada is known for having some of the most stunning landscapes in the world so nothing could be better than being paid to explore it. If you’re a passionate and energetic hiker who loves to adventure and discover as well as wanting to pass on their skills to others, then this role is perfect for you.

Camp directors are looking for hikers who have a strong desire to discover new places as well as being a confident leader who can lead groups of all ages and abilities through varying terrain.

what does a hiking instructor do at summer camp?

A hiking leader’s role at camp is to lead groups of campers on expeditions near and around the camp. Some hikes may be for only a day, while others may be over a couple of days. The length and difficulty of journey will vary depending on campers’ abilities.

Your main task is to ensure the organisation of the groups, as well as to plan the route ahead and ensure it is safe for the campers and suited to their ability.

How much experience do I need?

If you’re not the best in the world at your activity, there’s no need to worry - you’ll be teaching kids who are just there to have fun, most will even be complete beginners. You’ll be fully trained before your campers arrive, and you’ll be supported by the other counsellors at your camp.

How many children should I expect to teach?

Campers come down to sessions in divisions (age groups). These can vary in skill level, but usually are made up of 10-30 campers. You’ll then be paired with an individual camper or a group, and don’t worry - you’ll be supported by your fellow specialists and counsellors.

Do I still get days off?

Of course! Everyone needs time to recharge their batteries after an exciting but hectic week at camp, as well as the opportunity to explore the local area and further afield. Most camps will give you a 24 hour block of free time every week, whilst some others provide 2-4 days off in a row every few weeks.
